CID arrests two arms dealers

Kolkata: The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) sleuths arrested two arms dealers — Talib Mondal and Shamim Mondal — from a bus terminus on the Bongaon-Bagda Road in North 24 Parganas on Tuesday.
Senior CID officers said arms and ammunition were also seized from the duo. “We had been tracking the movements of the duo for some time. We received a tip-off that they were planning to board a bus from the Asharu bus stand on the Bongaon-Bagda Road. Accordingly, a trap was laid and both were nabbed at 1 pm,” they said.
Two 9 mm pistols, four six-chamber revolvers, seven single-shot guns and 44 rounds of live ammunition were recovered from them. “They would procure the arms from illegal gun factories of Bihar. Our preliminary interrogation shows they were on their way to deliver the arms to the underworld,” sources said.
Talib and Shamim had been involved in the arms racket for a long time, but managed to cover their tracks well due to which they had evaded arrest till now.
Both are residents of the Bagda area. They will be produced in Barasat Court on Wednesday and will be brought to Kolkata for questioning thereafter.
A month ago, on the eve of Republic Day, the CID arrested two arms dealers from the fringes of Kolkata with a huge cache of ammunition and a customer list, which included addresses near Nandigram in East Midnapore district. The seizure included nearly 8,000 rounds of ammunition, including 200 Czech-made ones. The kingpin of that racket, Nimai Das, is absconding.
