IPL shunted out, gloom descends on Kolkata

Kolkata: The occasion: announcement of Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) final squad for the Indian Premier League (IPL) at a city hotel on Sunday morning.

The buzz, however, was missing. By that time, the news had come from the BCCI headquarters in Mumbai that the Cricket carnival was being shifted from India to either England or South Africa.

KKR director of cricket operations John Buchanan, along with the team’s title sponsor Nokia’s vice-president D Shivakumar and team CEO Jay Bhattacharya were right on time for the press conference at the hotel. But while other KKR officials refused to react on the BCCI decision, Bhattacharya said they were waiting for official notification from the Board.

The cricket lovers here, however, have no such inhibitions. They are upset, and more than cricket, it is for the lost opportunity to see Shah Rukh Khan dancing in aisles at Eden Gardens.
