12 hour band seems successful at Kolkata

Life was affected here today during the 12-hour 'Bharat Bandh' called by 13 political parties, including the Left, protesting price rise of essentials and petro products.

Shops, markets, business establishments and educational institutions remained closed and vehicular traffic was off the roads.

Train services from both Sealdah and Howrah divisions were affected due to the shut down, amidst reports of blockades by Bharat Bandh supporters from some stations.

However, city's underground Metro services were functioning though the number of passengers was very thin.

No flight operated from the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport after 0600 hrs and the airport authority has rescheduled the flights.

There was no report of any major untoward incident from any part of the city as well as the state.

According to official sources, 3,000 additional police personnel had been deployed to maintain peace during the strike.
