IN VISION TO MAKE GREEN

The city can show a couple of certified green buildings and many plans for the future on World Environment Day.

Two films on climate change were screened at a programme organised by the British Council on Friday. They have been made by the winners of UK Environment Film Fellowships 2010.

The first film, Green City, by Madhyama Subramanian, explored how Surat is turning into a model city. The second one, Blocks of Green, by Bishnu Dev Haldar from the city and Jitendra Adappa highlighted how several buildings in Calcutta and Mumbai were cutting down carbon emissions.

At the event S.P. Gon Chaudhuri, the managing director of the West Bengal Green Energy Development Corporation, said: “The state government plans to construct a seven-storey green building for its science and technology department. Raj Bhavan has got a greenlift while the Assembly and Victoria Memorial are next in line.”

He also said ITC The Sonar Calcutta and Technopolis were eco-friendly buildings and residential estate Rabi Rashmi Abasan in New Town claims to generate 60 per cent power through solar energy though it has not been able to earn certification from the international Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design or national Green Rating for Integrated Habitat Assessment.
