China model for east’s green revolution

The Centre has proposed to replicate the Chinese model of ‘green revolution’ in a bid to promote hybrid rice in the eastern states of India. Drawing lessons from the success stories of the Chinese, the Central government has proposed the setting up of a task force for the purpose.

Speaking on the concluding day of the two-day workshop on proposed Eastern India Green Revolution on Saturday, Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar said: “A task force should be created at the national level for the aggressive promotion of hybrid rice.”

To be headed by an additional secretary, the task force will hold periodic meetings with officials from eastern states to work out a blue print for increasing the area under hybrid rice.

Minister of State for Agriculture K V Thomas had recently led a team to China to understand the development of hybrid breeds there. The team has submitted its report and recommendations to Pawar, who in turn has asked his ministry officials to look into the Chinese model and replicate it.
