After weeks of fun-filled rivalry, Bangali Brazilians & Argentines united in grief

World Cup 2010, which kicked off on June 11, starkly divided Kolkata into two sides — Brazil and Argentina. On Friday, half the city’s football lovers were left heartbroken after the exit of Brazil in the quarter-finals. And today, it was the turn of the other half who were left shocked with disbelief as Argentina were pulverised by Germany 4-0.

A pall of gloom descended over the entire city. It was almost as if Kolkata had gone into mourning. The yellow and green banners which adorn various city localities now seem to be part of a cruel joke for most Brazil fans of the city. Local clubs like Sampark and Harish Park Byayam (traditional Brazil supporters) have quietly removed the posters that they had so proudly posted all over their locality.

Jagadish Das, a resident of Hazra, could not stop his tears after Brazil went down to Holland 2-1. The 60-year-old man has not ventured out of home since Friday night. The huge posters of Kaka and other Brazilian demi-gods have been removed from the alleys and relegated to a corner of his house. “We are sad as Brazil have lost but supporters of Argentina, who are feeling on top of the world, will have to suffer the same fate,” forecast an inconsolable Das. Within a few hours, his words proved prophetic.
