Speaker: Would have been decent if CM attended House debate

West Bengal Assembly Speaker Hasim Abdul Halim on Friday obliquely criticised Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee for his absence in the House during the debate on the current situation in the state. Halim made it clear that the CM should have been present in the House and participated in the discussion on the motion, moved by the Opposition under Rule 390, on Thursday.

Left Front sources said that Bhattacharjee skipped the House during the debate as the Opposition had been boycotting all his programmes. But the Speaker, a member of the ruling CPM, maintained, “As head of the government, it would have been decent if the CM had been present during the discussion.

Halim was addressing the Assembly after ruling Left Front and Opposition legislators engaged in sharp verbal exchanges on the incident that had taken place in the House on Thursday. The Left MLAs demanded ‘punishment’ for the Trinamool legislators who had ‘assaulted’ the Speaker on Thursday.
